Trailnet community rides center on encouraging and enabling people of all ages and abilities to get outside and get active. The focus is fun, safety, appreciation of our communities, and spreading the love of bicycling! If you are seeking a family-friendly bicycle ride in a safe and encouraging environment, these rides are for you.

April 22, 2012 – Pedal for the Planet Bicycle Tour

Route: 6 miles on trails in Forest Park
Features: Save the planet and use pedal power as your mode of transportation at this tour celebrating Earth Day. Explore some of the natural ecosystems of Forest Park on your own or join the naturalist-led group tour at 9:30 a.m. Trailnet will offer free helmet fittings and helmets for the first 50 youth in need of a helmet. Route maps provided at registration. SAG support ends at 11:00 a.m. After the bike ride enjoy the Earth Day Festival in Forest Park.

Features: Experience living history at the Freedom Crossing Celebration. The Freedom Ride begins at the Celebration and tours sites that played a significant role in shaping the African-American heritage of our nation — including the Trestle, Old Courthouse, and Eads Bridge. The group ride returns in time for the re-enactment of the 1885 slave freedom crossing. The Bike Rodeo is an obstacle course for kids designed to make bike safety fun! We’ll have a limited number of kids’ bikes available to borrow for the course. Trailnet will offer free helmet fittings and helmets for the first 50 youth in need of a helmet.

May 13, 2012 – South Grand Mother's Day Bicycle Ride

Route: 5 mile family ride to and around Tower Grove Park; 20, or 34 miles on city streets.
Features: Celebrate Mother’s Day with a family bike ride. Bring your mom (or just bring yourself!) and see a variety of beautiful, historic neighborhoods. A rest stop at the Compton Hill Water Tower gives you the chance to climb to the top and enjoy the best view in the city for an additional $5 admission ($3 for children under 12). Moms who ride will be eligible for prizes!

Features: This tour will highlight local efforts to increase access to fresh, affordable food in urban neighborhoods, so be prepared to experience some of the greatest greens grown in St. Louis! Riders will travel along Bike St. Louis routes, explore historic neighborhoods, and tour community gardens including the Bell Demonstration Garden. Stay for music, food, and fun afterwards. Participants may purchase a 2-for-1 Gateway Greening and Trailnet membership on the day of the ride for $65 ($90 value).

Route: 15 miles on city streets, recommended for experienced cyclists
Features: Cahokia was the largest prehistoric native civilization north of Mexico and a religious, political, economic, and cultural center. This group ride includes stops for historic interpretation and closely follows the route taken by the people of this prehistoric civilization as they traveled between “mound cities” and across the Mississippi River. Cahokia Mounds was designated a World Heritage Site in 1982.

Features: Founded in 1767, the town of Carondelet, now one of St. Louis’s most historic neighborhoods, has a remarkable collection of stone houses built in the mid-19th century. Our ride will visit these unique structures as well as other historic buildings in this “city within a city.”

Route: 6 miles on city streets
Features: In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, St. Louis’s Central West End and a few blocks to the north was home to a surprisingly large number of writers who became part of the American literary tradition. This group ride includes visits to select writers’ former homes for short readings of their work, and stops for historic interpretation on a route through some of the most architecturally fascinating neighborhoods in the region.

August 18, 2012 – Riverfront Rangers Bicycle Tour

Registration: Riders must call 1-877-982-1410 at least 24 hours in advance to register or reserve bike rental. Arrive by 8:15 a.m., mandatory safety briefing at 8:30 a.m., group ride departs at 9:00 a.m.
Route: 6 or 24 miles on a trail
Features: Master the mighty Mississippi on this bike tour (long route goes to and onto the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge and back). Both routes will take place on the Riverfront Trail, a paved, recreational trail that runs along the Mississippi River and provides some amazing views. A ranger from the Gateway Arch will be lending historical and environmental knowledge of the area.

Features: This family friendly ride is perfect for anyone interested in learning more about city farming and supporting the local food movement. We’ll stop at four farms, learn about them, their histories, and how urban farming is taking hold in St. Louis. Bring a backpack so you can purchase produce! Riders can also sign up for CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares, a pledge to support a farm operation and receive share holder benefits. More information about CSAs will be available at the ride.

Features: This was the first commercial neighborhood in St. Louis devoted primarily to the automobile, and is frequently used by cyclists today. We’ll visit some historic buildings from “automobile row,” including one of the most overlooked landmarks in the entire Midwest.
