History:

The Glen Carbon Heritage Trail was dedicated to Ronald J. Foster Sr. in 1991 in recognition of his meritorious service to the Village of Glen Carbon as Trustee from 1965 to 1981 and Mayor 1981 to 2001. The Glen Carbon Heritage Trail was developed along the old abandoned Illinois Central railroad right-of-way, and it was one of the first 500 Rail-to-Trail conversions in the United States. The original three-mile Illinois Central passage was the first bike trail section to be encompassed by the "Heritage Trail" in 1991. The next trail section of five miles was added in 2003.
