Summary:

Grant’s Trail, located in South St. Louis County, is an 8-mile asphalt multi-use trail extending from the Orlando Gardens Trailhead at Hoffmeister Avenue to Leffingwell Dr. adjacent to the I-44 overpass in Kirkwood. In addition to being a great place to ride bicycles, use in-line skates or walk, the trail offers a number of other attractions including, a BMX park, butterfly garden, connection to St. Louis County Clydesdale Park, Grant’s Farm, nature walks through the woods, Orlando Gardens Bed and Breakfast, Whitecliff Park and the Crestwood Community Center and Whitehaven National Historical Site.

History:

Grant's Trail runs along what used to be the Missouri Pacific Railroad line. The railroad abandoned the line in 1990, and Trailnet purchased the original 1.3-mile section in 1991 under the Rails to Trails Act. Trailnet opened the first section, originally named the “Carondelet Greenway”, in 1994 and then purchased additional sections of the rail corridor and steadily developed the trail to a length of 6.2 miles. St. Louis County Parks Department has helped develop, operated and maintained the asphalt trail since 1994 under a long-term lease from Trailnet. Trailnet purchased an additional two-mile long rail corridor extending into the communities of Crestwood, Webster Groves, Oakland and Kirkwood in 2001. The Great Rivers Greenway District purchased this section from Trailnet in 2005 and opened the new section of trail in November, 2006.

Trailnet's
Role:

Trailnet planned and managed construction of 6.2 miles of trail. Trailnet owns the original 6.2-mile long trail corridor, and continues to assists with planning, programming, public feedback and volunteer projects along the trail.

Future
Plans:

Trailnet plans to develop two-acre Taylor Lake, located east of where the trail runs into Reavis Barracks Road, as a wetland and open it to the public. The lake was created by Taylor Excavating in the 1940s. Trailnet is also working with the Great Rivers Greenway District to extend Grant's Trail another two miles beyond where it ends at Hoffmeister Road to the River Des Peres Trail.
