The West Alton Trail was Trailnet's first purchase, acquiring a one-mile section of the corridor in 1991. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers owns the remaining trail section. The trail was developed along an abandoned railroad right-of-way and opened in 1995. Trailnet sold the one-mile section of trail to the Great Rivers Greenway District in 2005. |

Future
Plans: |
|
Future plans as part of the Confluence Greenway Project include extending the KATY trail to Machens and then to connect to the West Alton Trail. This connection will allow bicyclists to ride on dedicated trails free of vehicles from downtown St. Louis to the KATY Trail as well as to the Vadalabene/Great River Road Bike Trail using the MCT Confluence Trail in Illinois, which connects to the Clark Bridge and West Alton Trail.
