Missouri Complete Streets

WE TRAIN LEADERS TO CREATE HEALTHY COMMUNITIES

Our workshops, conferences, publications and partnerships give us the opportunity to teach policy makers and community leaders the best practices that support walking and biking.

Trailnet trains policymakers across the state at four regional planning commissions on Complete Streets policies and designs. Through this grant Trailnet builds partnerships across the state to strengthen support for creating healthier communities with policy and built environment changes.  Combining policy with changes to street design to make them safer for people walking, biking, and those with disabilities is a proven method for increasing physical activity.

Missouri Complete Streets (MOCS) is led by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, together with 12 additional partners. Trailnet delivers technical assistance. The project seeks to support and improve the health, well-being and economic vitality of all people and communities across the state through transportation and active living policy development and education.

Complete Streets have no one design, but they create a space that is safe and comfortable for people ages 8 to 80.  These policies represent approaches that consider the needs of all users and help them get to where they need to go safely. Some examples of improvements that improve safety and comfort for all users include:

  • Sidewalks, crosswalks, and accessible curb cuts
  • Bicycle lanes
  • Median refuge islands
  • Bus shelters
  • Bump outs for sidewalks and bus stops
  • Audible pedestrian signals
  • Shoulders on rural roads

Trailnet hosts the MOCS meetings quarterly. Folks can get involved with MOCS by clicking on this website for the MOCS Advisory Committee and emailing MissouriCompleteStreets@health.mo.gov.
